“Bees are the smallest of birds. They are born from the bodies of oxen, or from the decaying flesh of slaughtered calves; worms form in the flesh and then turn into bees. Bees live in community, choose the most noble among them as king, have wars, and make honey. Their laws are based on custom, but the king does not enforce the law; rather the lawbreakers punish themselves by stinging themselves to death. Bees are afraid of smoke and are excited by noise. Each has its own duty: guarding the food supply, watching for rain, collecting dew to make honey, and making wax from flowers.”

— i love medieval bestiaries so much

Aside from confusing the spawning of maggots and flies with bees and getting the gender wrong on the monarch, this is not terrible. You can see that whoever wrote this spent a lot of time tending an apiary.

What does it take to teach a bee to use tools? A little time, a good teacher and an enticing incentive. Read more here: http://to.pbs.org/2mpRUAz

“Friend? Friend push ball? I push ball. I do good.”

Bees.  Smart enough to push a ball, not smart enough to not be fooled by a stick masquerading as a bee.

maybe they know and they’re just being polite

Other dimensional beings are undoubtedly amazed at what human beings will accept as human beings too. “But it’s just a stick with a person on it.”

this morning on yard duty, i saved a large, sleepy bumble bee from some children who were gonna stomp on it because children are afraid of things. the bee was cold, and moving very slowly, not up to flying yet. i picked up the bee and it climbed my arm. the children screamed. i told them it was ok. the bee got onto my neck and into my hair. the children kept telling me that it was in my hair. i turned my head so the bee was in the sun. i stood there with the children and the bee until it warmed up and flew away. see, i said, it didn’t hurt me. if you don’t hurt things, they usually don’t hurt you.

I went back to this school after a week away and a boy in year one in the lunch line said to me “remember when you holded the bee?”

Fun Facts About Honey

thewannabeee:

some-kind-of-bad-pun:

thewannabeee:

– Honey is mostly sugar (WoW!) it is 80% sugar and 20% water (double WoW!)

– There are over 20,000 species of bees, but only 4 make HONEY

-Honey is the ONLY food that contains all the substances you need to survive (Including WATER)

-Children under the age of 1 should not eat honey… why? because sometimes it contains bad stuff called botulism and can cause them to get botulism poisoning (that sucks, even infants should taste the deliciousness that is honey)

-Honey will crystallize under optimum temperatures (this has a lot to do with how you store it)

-Bees produce honey to eat during the winter when there are no flowers and no nectar for them.

-A honeybee would only need an ounce of honey to be able to fuel a flight around the world (this makes for a very cultural bee!)

-A typical beehive can make up to 400 pounds of honey a year! (Wowza!)

This reads like it was written by a bee and I’m 100% here for it

This is singlehandedly THE BEST compliment I have ever received 🙂
