Just a little taste of what’s going on at my workplace right now.
We have been fighting for a raise because a lot of people who work at Disney have to work 60+ hours a week just to get by.
What was their response? “Ok, everyone gets a bonus. $1000. But not all at once. $500 now and $500 at the end of the year.” (in case some people get fired or quit, so they don’t have to pay the full amount to those people).
Of course, we were like “No, that’s not what we said we wanted. We want a PERMANENT RAISE.”
So Disney was like OK, fine, whoever is NOT part of the union fighting for a raise gets the $1000 bonus 🙂
Meanwhile, we are still fighting for a raise…
What if Millennials’ aversion to car-buying isn’t a temporary side effect of the recession, but part of a permanent generational shift in tastes and spending habits? It’s a question that applies not only to cars, but to several other traditional categories of big spending—most notably, housing. And its answer has large implications for the future shape of the economy—and for the speed of recovery.
It’s safe to say that a decent number of Tumblr users are a part of the Millennial generation. So, tell us: Do you own a car or house? If not, why?
IT’S BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO DISPOSABLE INCOME YOU THUNDERING IDIOTS. Fucking preference has nothing to do with it. 50% of college graduates have no job! They all have the most student loan debt ever! What are you asking this question for?!
Also: housing is a good bit more expensive now.
My parents got a 15-year mortgage on a new house in the mid-70s. The house was $32,000. Average home price in that area now? $190,000.
So, home prices went up. Food prices went up. Health care prices went WAY UP. Rent prices went up. Higher education went up so damn high that some of us forgo that all together. Energy prices went up. Car prices went up.
Prices of prices went up.
We also pay cell phone bills, internet bills, data plans, text plans, online subscriptions, cable/satellite tv, netflix, DVR subscriptions — bills that didn’t even exist 30-40 years ago. We also use computers and smartphones and microwaves and other consumer electronics that didn’t exist 20-50 years ago.
We need medications and doctors and contact lenses and tampons and maxi pads and other things that cost money just to be alive and keep us healthy.
Most of us can’t afford to:
Get married and have a “Traditional” big wedding
Buy a house
Buy a new car
PLAN to have children
Take two, consecutive weeks of vacation.
Jobs that paid 50k in the late 1990s now pay between 30-35. Interest rates that favor consumers have gone down.
So I say, no. We are not choosing not to buy homes. We’re not choosing to take the bus in cities where there’s no good public transit. WE ARE NOT CHOOSING TO LIVE WHAT SOCIETY DEEMS AS AN UNDESIRABLE LIFESTYLE.
Don’t even get me started on the fact that these two people in the picture are young white hipsters. Young black and brown folks have been forgoing homeownership and buying new cars for decades, this shit isn’t new, pal. You’re just acting like this shit is new because it’s hitting white folks.
anyway, my point is: We are fucking broke.
read the commentary above ^^
“Hey. Hey, guys. I know the economy being fucked up is totally our fault, but what if we tell people the next generation…wants to be poor?”
Women pay more for products. Men pay more for clothing.
Do men really pay more for clothes?
Yea, seriously. Shirts, sneakers, jeans, socks…etc. Ask your male friends how much they pay for a pair of descent jeans. It’ll blow your mind.
At least their pants have fucking pockets tho
“Men pay more for clothing.”
(Target)
Are you sure?
Are you
(Walmart)
ABSOLUTELY SURE??
BECAUSE I’M NOT ENTIRELY CONVINCED
LIKE AT ALL
THAT MEN HAVE IT HARDER
(Victoria’s Secret)
OH AND SHOULD I BRING UP PANTIES WHILE I’M AT IT? I am a firm believer of the “fuck you, I’ll wear briefs that don’t give me a wedgie, I don’t care if they’re not sexy” policy, but a lot of women are expected to wear panties and thongs because GASP WOMEN MUST BE BEAUTIFUL AT ALL TIMES. Here’s a screenshot of some Victoria’s secret panties!
Wow. It’s almost as if there’s a pattern here.
Women are expected to buy more clothing, and literally all of it is more expensive, so fuck all of you.
*HAMMERS THE REBLOG BUTTON*
Fucking infuriating. And, NO ONE pays more for clothes than fat women. Tired of it.
Have you ever stepped on a Torrid? $50-$80 for a blouse.
^^^^^
Yup it totally gets more costly when you’re not model thin.
Woah
I’m here to confirm the fat girl comment…. decent fitting, CUTE plus size shit is just expensive as fuck.
When I worked in fast food for minimum wage, they would yell at us and lecture us about “stealing” fries and burgers (while we had to throw out TONS of food every day) as though the giant billion-dollar corporations of McDonald’s and Sonic couldn’t afford to give their employees something to eat (while not even paying us a living wage).
Now I work at an upscale restaurant (it’s fancy, like celebrities eat there fairly often) and not only do I make WAY better money but they give us 2 free meals a day (eaten on the clock) and they’re GOOD. Today I got baked cod, spring rolls, rice pilaf, stir fry, and mashed potatoes and eggplant. Oh, and free espresso and juice. From this restaurant owned by a local man who is in no way a billionaire.
Obviously money is not the issue, valuing your employees as people is.
Ben is very upset about private corporations being able to decide what content they allow on their platforms. What’s wrong, Ben? I thought you liked free enterprise!
Thing is Hitler did some good for the german ppl, thus the immense support for him. The orange idiot however doesn’t do anything but playing Golf and approval ratings are decreasing. So, there’s that.
Literally shut the fuck up the only good thing Hitler ever did was put a bullet in his own brain
😂 Look, i hate him, too. But he created jobs. You think Hitler would have had the following he had being an angry men shouting at the clouds? He was a vile being and deserved more than the outcome he got.
Yeah, you’re right hitler created a lot of new jobs
I WONDER HOW HE DID THAT
THIS JUST IN
SLAVERY COUNTS AS JOB CREATION
uh yall do recall that he saved germany from the great depression and regardless of he fact that he was a mad man he did pull of a fairly decent socialist state before the whole “kill the jews” thing came up hell he didnt even want to do that
PUT YOUR FEET IN A WOODCHIPPER
not to be all like “read the thickest book i own six times over like me” but @msdancealot and @shotbythewolf have added some of the wrongest things ive ever read in my life soooooo
1-most of the make work programs of the first few years of nazi germany were created and budgeted for by the weimar government. after this like damn near every job created “by hitler” involved manufacturing weapons of war or extraction of resources to make weapons
2-its important to realize much of the world was leaving the great depression at the exact same time. a global economic recovery ‘saved’ germany, not hitler. theres alot of pretty solid evidence hitler destroyed germany and its economy actually, by running the domestic/consumer economy into the ground to make war
3-“fairly decent socialist state” the nazis were fascists. any sort of nazi social welfare programs didnt come from the same line of thinking as a socialist state. the nazi state was a ramshackle mess, rationing was commonplace, constant financial crisis
4-hell he didnt even want to kill the jews—-this is wrong. hitlers ideaology was so steeped in the idea of a “global jewish conspiracy” he wanted to kill every single jewish person on the planet. he wanted to do that. there wasnt a moment where he said “well shit guys looks like we have to kill the jews now” he wanted to do that for a very long time
I became a teacher, partly, because I didn’t want a job where my goal was to make money. I didn’t want to create profit. I want to create thinkers and voters and citizens.
Standardized Testing is part of a push by conservative government to make public education profitable for private corporations.
My state pays Pearson $90 Million EVERY YEAR just for STAAR testing. That doesn’t include Pearson test prep materials, or any of the other tests they run.Pearson writes G/T tests, AP tests, even teacher certification tests.
A tweet that reads “just a quick reminder that a society exists to serve the people within it. there’s no such thing as a person being ‘useless’ to a society, only a society that is useless to a person”
we should make fun of americans more. why dont their shops include tax in the price tag. like how much does this item cost? its a surprise 🙂
Honestly, tea. I’ve lived here my whole life and I have never once known what my total is gonna be at the register. Total fucking mystery.
im an ex-american living in new zealand for the past two years and it still never fails to blow my mind that i can take a $2 coin, walk up to a counter with two $1 items, and perform the expected transaction
If you wanted to see how many people don’t know what taxes are or how they work, read the notes
I think my only problem with continued joke— tech bros just invented busses tech bros just invented renting etc— is that it assumes these guys are just clueless idiots who don’t know how the world works. The reality is these guys know exactly what they’re doing and what they’re doing is creating a lifestyle that deliberately excludes the poor. Re-invent the bus system so you don’t have to sit next to the poor. Re-invent renting to be even more exclusive.
Re-invent taxes so you be sure your money is only helping “your community” ie other wealthy people and then vote to lower actual taxes so that none of that money goes to help anybody else.
This is absolutely a purposeful plan. Nobody wants to drive on roads with potholes or walk on broken sidewalks but why should our tax money go to *those people* I know let’s create a “community startup” so we can cut taxes without personal inconvenience.
