Bunnies Are NOT Good Easter Gifts

typhonserpent:

Listen, friends, I have to get serious for a second here.

image

This is Asriel. You may have seen me post about her. Like all good pet owners, I love her. She’s my little baby girl.

image

And yes, she loves walks! She also loves cuddles and flowers and pets! People have fully stopped their cars on the streets to tell me how cute she is. They stop and ask if they can pet her or hold her. They ask if they can feed her a blade of grass or a clover. And I usually say yes (provided the lawn in question doesn’t use pesticides) because Asriel loves attention and she loves getting a little sun and a little exercise.

But then I always hear it. Every single time I walk her, it’s inevitable. Someone will say, “What a great idea! We should look into getting a bunny!”

STOP

Or at least pause. I’m here to tell you a few things about bunny ownership that are less glamorous than when I walk her in the park.

  • Rabbits poop.
    I know what you’re
thinking, you’re thinking, “lol my dog is a poop machine!” but you don’t
get it. If you dismiss this then you have no idea how much a bunny
    poops.
image

This is Asriels litter box after one day. I
came home from work to this. Doesn’t look like a lot? Imagine if I forgot to clean it one day. Picture this doubled. Picture it tripled. I clean her litter box twice a day, three times if you count the one in her sleeping pen. It is required that I do this, or else she will get sick, and so will people who come into my apartment.
And on that note

  • Just because MY bunny is trained, doesn’t mean YOUR bunny can be trained.
    Not
all rabbits will poop or pee in the litter box. Not all rabbits walk on
a leash. Not all rabbits want to cuddle. Not all rabbits want to be
    picked up.
You didn’t raise Asriel, and you didn’t see me train her. So you don’t know that I got her at a mere month old (the older a rabbit is, the harder they are to train). You didn’t see me follow her around the apartment for weeks with rubber gloves on. You didn’t see me spray her with a water bottle for trying to eat the carpet. You didn’t see me observe her behavior as carefully as possible so as to conform to her behavior, rather than expecting to train her in the same manner as a cat or a dog.
  • Rabbits have very specific diets.
This isn’t like most pets where you can buy a specific brand of food and leave it at that. Asriel requires a harmonious mix of hay, pellets, vegetables, and fresh greens to keep her healthy and strong. The diets will vary depending on the individual rabbit and breed.
ALL rabbits require CONSTANT access to hay for fiber and dental health. Pellets and vegetables (especially carrots, because they are high in sugar) should be given in limited amounts.
Going against this diet is DANGEROUS. Digestion problems are very real in rabbits. Fun fact – did you know a rabbit can’t vomit? They have no way of expelling toxic substances aside from allowing their body to (at least attempt to) digest it.
  • Rabbits eat and chew on everything.
This is not a habit you will break them of. It is in their nature. They see a cord hanging from the wall and it looks just like a delicious blade of grass to them. I have heard of rabbits eating entire textbooks, clothes, toys, cords, plastic, chewing on metal. They do not know how to differentiate between your favorite necklace and a tasty piece of celery.
  • Rabbits are EXPENSIVE.
Asriel has to go to a specialized vet who has his office set up out of town. We have to take a cab to get there because no bus lines run there. That’s a $50 cab ride in addition to the $300 vet bill. Having her spayed alone was $350.
  • Vet visits are NOT optional
Just because America doesn’t have any laws requiring rabbits be vaccinated or spayed/neutered, doesn’t mean you can neglect the healthcare of your rabbit. Regular veterinary visits are necessary to detect small issues before they become big ones. You need to seek out a vet who specializes in rabbit care and rabbit surgery. Spaying or neutering your rabbit will prevent hormone-driven behaviors and uterine cancer in female rabbits.
  • Rabbits need lots of space
Bunnies have powerful hind legs that need to stretch, hop, jump, and run. A bunny trapped in a cage all day not only risks stress (which reduces your rabbit’s lifespan), but also depression and even muscular dystrophy. They need exercise and lots of freedom.
  • Rabbits bite and scratch
Even Asriel does. As used as she is to being handled, when she wants down, she’ll let you know quick. They have sharp teeth and will nip if you do something they don’t like. Hell, some rabbits are cranky and will nip for no reason. Not all rabbits like to be handled. Just because Asriel cuddles under your chin doesn’t mean every rabbit will.

“But Typhon!” You may be saying, “Why even keep a rabbit if it’s so much work? Don’t you love your rabbit?”

YES! Asriel is the sweetest bunny and I am the luckiest bunny owner to have her. Dogs and cats are lots of work too, and nobody would argue that it isn’t worth keeping one.

But here’s the thing …

Every year, thousands of rabbits are adopted or purchased as Easter presents.

Every year, thousands of rabbits are abandoned, set free (a death sentence for domestic rabbits), or die because the people who receive them as presents do not know how to care for them.

It breaks my little bunny-loving heart. These are not bad people. I’m sure they wanted the best for their bunny. I’m sure they tried their best and just didn’t expect the commitment, or didn’t know any better.

Adopting a bunny means a commitment of 10 or more years. It is a financial and emotional commitment, and one that you should not take on without some SERIOUS research and preparation. I have sunk thousands of dollars into the care of my bunny, and while I cannot say enough that it is worth every penny, I bought her knowing what I was getting myself into.

So please, please, please say it with me …

Bunnies are not good Easter presents

Bunnies are not good Easter presents

BUNNIES ARE NOT GOOD EASTER PRESENTS

BUNNIES ARE NOT GOOD EATER PRESENTS

DO NOT BUY A CHILD A BUNNY FOR EASTER

DO NOT BUY ANYONE A BUNNY FOR EASTER UNLESS THEY ARE FULLY PREPARED TO CARE FOR IT

If you’ve read all of this and you still think you’d like a bunny – great! Goodness knows the shelters will be full of them a few weeks after Easter. I recommend giving https://rabbit.org/ a visit, and perhaps picking up a copy of The Rabbit Handbook by Karen Gendron. You should also do some research on veterinary care in your area, as well as calling up local pet stores to make sure they carry the supplies you’ll need to care for your rabbit. Make sure to get the supplies BEFORE you get the rabbit. No bunny should come home and not have a pen to sleep in.

Bunnies are great pets. They have a wide range of personalities just like cats and dogs. They can be shy, friendly, playful, skittish, cuddly, or nippy. All rabbits are good rabbits. I just beg of you, this Easter season, to remember that they are living creatures. They need constant care and attention, and while it’s well worth the effort, it’s not something to take lightly.

Asriel and I thank you for listening.

This Saturday, March 24, we March For Our Lives

If you stand with the students and activists of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and the 30,000 people killed by guns every year, we’re asking you to turn out for the March For Our Lives. It’s time we say #NeverAgain and end gun violence.

There are 828 sibling marches planned in conjunction with the main march in Washington DC. This is global, and chances are there is one near you.

We understand that not everyone can attend a march, so we want to make it easy for everyone to participate. Your voice matters, even if you can’t be there in person. That’s why we’re creating a virtual space with optional ways for everyone to participate:

  • Join us this Saturday as we livestream the March For Our Lives starting at 12 p.m. EST. The livestream will be at the top of every dashboard on every phone, computer, and tablet that uses Tumblr that day.
  • There’s going to be an @action-packed dashboard takeover with original art sourced from the Tumblr community and @creatrs.
  • Sign the petition and make your voice heard.
  • Donate to March For Our Lives, if you can.

You can show your support that day by posting your illustrations, your poems, your promises—anyway you want to express yourself. We even have stickers to add to your photos, if you want. They’re a collaboration between Tumblr Creatrs (@creatrs) and our friends at Kanvas.

image

They’re in your app now. Make sure to tag your posts with #NeverAgain so everyone can see your support.

This is it, Tumblr. This is how change happens.  When people ask #WhatWillYouDo, you can point them to Saturday, March 24; To the march you participated in, the money you donated, or the messages you spread across the globe with social media.

Good luck and stay safe.

Bullying in the age of the internet

plannedparenthood:

Bullying that happens online can be just as harmful as other bullying — and sometimes it’s even worse. That’s because it’s hard to get away from and it can reach people no matter where they are or what they’re doing.

What can I do if I’m being bullied online?

Getting bullied on social media or through text messaging can feel really terrible. Being connected to your phone, tablet, or computer all the time means that a bully can sneak into your life and make it feel like there’s no safe place to be. But there are things you can do to help stop online bullying.

  • Change your privacy settings. Make sure that all of your social media accounts have very strict privacy settings. Set your accounts to “friends only” or “private.”
  • Block and un-friend. Block any harassing accounts, email addresses, or phone numbers.
  • Keep your personal details private. Don’t post your home address, phone number, school name, or any other personal information about yourself.
  • Take a break from your phone or computer. If it feels like the online bullying just won’t stop, take a break from social media. Turn off your phone or put it out of your sight.
  • Save harassing emails, texts, or messages. Take screenshots of harassment. This can be important evidence down the line.
  • Report bullying where it happens. Report online abuse to Facebook or Twitter if you’re bullied on those platforms. You can report to other site admins if you’re bullied on their sites.
  • Tell an adult that you trust. Talk with a parent, teacher, coach, counselor, or someone who you think will be supportive. Adults can only help if they know about the problem.
  • Don’t respond to mean or threatening messages. This can make bullying worse.  Also, you could get in trouble if you make threats back.
  • Report serious threats to the police. If someone threatens your safety or shares sexual pictures or video of you, report it to the police immediately.

It may be hard to care about a bully’s feelings, but people who bully are often in pain and insecure about themselves. So they might be unfairly taking their bad feelings out on you. It isn’t right, but it might help to remember that their mean actions are not about you. Their bullying is probably about their own issues or insecurities. You’re valuable. You’re important to this world. And no matter what anyone might say, you didn’t do anything to deserve this.

Hari Nef is helping to normalize transwomen’s bodies and identities in a really important way that if you’re cisgender you may not have thought about

Nef goes on to explain the difference between her photoshoot with Velencoso, versus how transgender women are typically photographed in fashion editorials. “images of trans femmes being loved rarely exist outside of pornography,” Nef wore. “We tend to be hyper-sexualized and objectified within the cisgender gaze. Either that or we’re dehumanized as scum or (just as bad) untouchable goddesses.”

if youre gonna be a koreaboo at least read up on our history and spread awareness of the tragedies that south korea has faced because of japan. stop glorifying japan’s history if you don’t know it in full.

ive lived my whole life hating my heritage because no one cared about south korea since kpop and kdramas weren’t popular back then. i lived knowing that people were cheering on a nation that committed countless war crimes (cultural genocide, raping hundreds of thousands of women, torturing/beheading/massacring innocent civilians) against my country and other asian nations. i lived in that shadow knowing no one cared about my culture and its history.

since korean culture is becoming so popular nowadays please at least know how badly south korea has been treated by japan and how this shit still affects south koreans today.

one last thing: do NOT say that the korean and japanese cultures are similar. im sick of hearing it and other koreans are sick of hearing it. japan tried to wipe out our culture and history in WWII when we were colonized by them.

Hi everyone,

Ariel Jeffrey Kouakou from Montreal has been missing since March 12, 2018. He went to visit his friend that lived a few blocks away from him, but his friend was not home. Ariel never came back home.

Ariel is was last seen wearing a black coat with a hood, grey pants and yellow shoes. He is about four-foot-seven and 88 pounds.

An amber alert was triggered on Tuesday but was lifted 24 hours after as the criteria to maintain it was no longer being met. As of today (March 16, 2018) Ariel still hasn’t been found.

The police and many volunteers have been canvassing the streets to find him but they have had no luck. There’s also a surveillance video of Ariel walking by and turning around twice. His family believes he was kidnapped.

Canadian/Quebec followers, if you have any information, please contact Info-Crime Montreal at 514-393-1133 or call 911. Anything helps.

In the meantime, a GoFundMe has been set up to help his family as they concentrate their efforts on the search of their son. Please donate if you can, or simply share within your network.

On a personal, we are based in Canada and this story is all we can think about.  We pray that Ariel is found.

Still not found. Please keep sharing. (March 19, 2018)

Man it baffles me that people undervalue artists and (especially) professional artists. People want to hire us for freelance work but don’t want to pay the baseline, reasonable amount because they don’t realize how much art is actually worth in the industry.

Freelance Contract work goes up from $400/day

Freelance Piece work varies, but people at my animation studio sell theirs for like $500

So yeah. Art from professionals is no joke ☆☆

FYI this is literally from an episode where Lois and Clark fight actual Nazis. That little punk was a NAZI working undercover at The Daily Planet.

This was like 1995.

Not that it should be in question at all but Superman and his wife fucking hate Nazis. They hate them. If you are a Nazi sympathizer, Superman hates you.

Also, just in case you’re distinguishing yourself, Superman also hates the KKK.

superman was created by two jewish men. like i feel that’s an important thing missing from this post. there’s a lot of analysis out there that showcases superman exploring judaic themes. nazi newspapers denounced superman and his creators.

jack kirby and joe simon (captain america), bob kane (batman), stan lee (god, how do you boil him down to one iconic creation?), joe schuster and jerry siegel (superman), will eisner (the spirit) — all were jewish.

and like i’ll delete this comment if i’m swerving out of my lane as someone who isn’t jewish, but i feel like it’s important to note that mainstream comics were created by jewish people and that “superman hates nazis” is not something to say without giving historical context. superman isn’t just some nazi-fighting ally fantasy from people who probably wouldn’t actually call out antisemitism — let alone fight it — but who want to look like they’re actually doing something with empty threats; superman is, by existing and thriving, actively fighting antisemetic ideas and white supremacy. he is one of the most important pop culture characters in the world and his origins are judaic, and i think it’s a great disservice to not inform people about this so they don’t get to think they’re equal to superman when they reblog a post saying “punch nazis” but never bother to actually do or say anything when they’re confronted with white supremacy and antisemitism and the influences of both in their lives.

i don’t want to talk over jewish people, so i’ll totally delete this comment if it seems like i am. but i just wanted to take a moment to rant because i love comics and i see people excluding the origins of this industry and its creators so often in the community.
