My boyfriend is trying to explain cricket to me again. “He’s only got two balls to make 48 runs”, he says. The camera focuses on a man. Underneath him it says LEFT ARM FAST MEDIUM. A ball flies into the stands and presumably fractures someone’s skull. “There’s a free six”, my boyfriend says. 348 SIXES says the screen. A child in the audience waves a sign referencing Weet-Bix
The first time he showed me this I assumed he was pranking me
I once applied and interviewed at a bookstore cafe for a barista position. It was way closer to my home, and I had almost a decade of experience working in a coffee shop at that point.
Got to the interview, and it turned out they didn’t want a barista, they wanted someone to spearhead their new cafe, as the cafe that had been in the store before didn’t want to resign their lease with the bookshop. They wanted to put their own cafe in its place, all new menus etc. They needed someone experienced to train their new staff, to handle window displays, to communicate with the bookstore owners about changes and needs of the cafe, to be able to handle inventory and ordering.
Okay, I had basically done most of that stuff at my previous job. I asked if cafe positions would also be required/trained to work the bookstore.
They would. They would be required to run the book sale counter, stock and reshelf books, and help bookshop customers find things. They would also–despite having an outside cleaning company–have to help maintain bathroom cleanliness. They’d have to take out trash, and clean spills, and vacuum.
Wow, that’s a lot, I said. Is this a manager’s position, then?
No, I was told, it wasn’t, but there was a chance that after a training period it might become one. And that made me pause, because I’d been working as the front-of-house manager at my cafe, and I knew how much work that entailed, and what kind of money I was making, and it was only the commute that had me looking for a new job.
So I asked what the job paid.
$8. E I G H T D O L L A R S. Per hour. Barely above minimum. For all of that work. For someone they expected to get an entirely new cafe up and running, and then also do the work of the bookstore and the cleaning company as well.
I thanked the woman for the interview, said I’d have to talk to my significant other about the impact a four dollar pay cut would have on our finances, and that I wasn’t sure it was the job for me. She asked me to sleep on it, and she’d call me the next day.
This is a job I was way more than qualified for. I had years of experience doing exactly the things they wanted. It was a convenient location, close to my home–I could walk there if I absolutely had to. I did not go home and talk about that four dollar pay cut and what it would do to our finances. I knew as soon as she told me that not only was it not feasible for us, it was downright insulting. That little money? For a frankly ridiculous list of responsibilities and expectations?
She called back the next day. I thanked her again, and told her in no uncertain terms that my time was worth way more than what they were offering.
And whenever people bitch about Millennials being lazy, not spending money, not buying houses…whatever the complaint of the month is…I think about the very nice lady who conducted this interview, and how confused she was that I didn’t want the job.
In order for disabled people to receive any sort of financial assistant for their housing, food, bills, medical supplies, etc., they cannot ever have more than $2,000 of resources to their name. Ever.
It doesn’t matter what it’s for.
You’re saving up for a new wheelchair?
For college?
To put a downpayment on a house?
Hell man, you just happen to budget for once in your life so that you can have some extra money in case something bad happens?
Your benefits immediately get cut off if you’re a cent over $2,000.
And, even worse, you usually end up having to pay back every dollar the government gave you that month.
So say you get $400. If they find out you’re twenty dollars over the resource limit, you have to give them all $400 back and you undergo an investigation of your funds to see if you will continue getting money.
“What if I spend the money that day?”
Doesn’t matter. In fact, from what I can tell, people who do this are actually put under investigation for fraud.
And yes, this system literally kills people.
Remember when “Guardians of the Galaxy” came out? one of Rocket Racoon’s creators, Bill Mantlo, suffered an accident in 1992 and has irreparable brain damage.
before the movie came out, Marvel gave him an exclusive preview screening. SOme people were upset because they felt if Marvel was really wanted to thank mantlo, they should have donated money to Mantlo’s family.
Bill Mantlo’s brother had to come out and explain: If Marvel gave them monetary aid, Bill Mantlo would lose his financial assistance.
That’s so utterly depressing.
disgusting
I have friends on welfare who won’t pick up a penny in the street because they’d risk the welfare they struggled to get for 10 years.
oh look another fucked up thing in this world. let’s just add it to the list. number 63858b
My brother has been on California State SSI for autism for the last 10 years, and he absolutely has to (no joke, HAS TO) spend all 720 bucks of his SSI every month, because if he puts it in the bank he risks losing his SSI altogether.
Sometimes, at the end of the month, he has no idea what to do with his money because the whole month went by and he still has 400-ish bucks in his account, and he fucking panics because he doesn’t want to get anywhere near 2,000.
And here’s the funnest part of the story!
One day he did a huge commission on Second Life and wound up earning 1500 bucks off of it, and he told the guy to donate it 500 bucks at a time over 3 months. The guy didn’t want to, and just donated all 1500, which put my brother at 2,036 bucks.
The state IMMEDIATELY (I’m talking less than an hour) called him up to tell him over the phone that they were canceling his SSI, because they noticed he had gone over the 2,000 buck threshold. He had to tell them that someone had made a charitable donation to him and that this was not a common occurrence in any way shape or form, and upon not believing him, my mother had to call to talk to them as his legal caretaker and say basically the same thing until they called off the cancellation of his SSI money.
He also had to cancel his renter’s assistance because it put him to 1,062 a month, so if he went 30 days without spending any money they’d cancel his SSI altogether. Like, none of us in the family have any fucking clue why that regulation is in place and it’s the stupidest shit in human history.
Please, legal side of Tumblr, tell me what positive reasoning this law has?
It’s not just money, though. Things you own can count against your resource limit as well provided that they’re not exempt and provided that they’re worth money.
Also, the rules about what is and is not exempt from being counted against your resource limit are incredibly vague and deliberately open to interpretation. Even things that are normally exempted like clothing or furniture could be deemed non-exempt if a capricious bureaucrat decides that it’s actually worth too much money and thus counts as an ‘investment.’
As someone who receives SSI this causes me a huge amount of stress.
This is so unbelievably fucked up
don’t couples have to divorce sometimes because their combined income disqualifies them from assistance?
Conservatives: be more frugal and save money instead of asking to get paid more
Also conservatives: if you save money you’re a sneaky thief and a fraud
for starters, just so you have some background, drake is currently dating an 18 year old girl he met when she was 16, he is 31.
also here’s a tweet from drake himself talking about fucking young girls
and noww let’s talk about how he’s preying on Millie.
At the Emmys, when asked about her friendship with him, she said he regularly texts her things like “I miss you” and that they’re very close, also, that they talk about boys/dating advice. He is a 31 year old man and this is a 14 year old girl. He’s talking to her about boys and dating and sending her “I miss you” texts, there’s a word for this. It’s called grooming. (Grooming is when someone builds an emotional connection with a child to gain their trust for the purposes of sexual abuse, sexual exploitation or trafficking. Children and young people can be groomed online or face-to-face, by a stranger or by someone they know – for example a family member, friend or professional.)
He met his current girlfriend at sixteen talked and flirted with her, groomed her like this, and is now in a relationship with her. It is so disgusting to see people claiming this is normal, the industry she is in is highly pedophilic and she’s a child. This is not normal or okay, a 31 year old grown man has no business texting a 14 year old girl like this.
they have so little respect for the intelligence of this generation
Disgusting
Fox reporter: What do you think of this blatantly offensive thing? College students: I don’t appreciate the light-hearted dehumanization of fellow human beings Fox reporter: lmao listen to this sjw bullshit #lol #kek #triggered
The
Trump administration is unable to account for the whereabouts of nearly
1,500 migrant children who illegally entered the United States alone
this year and were placed with sponsors after leaving federal shelters,
according to congressional findings released on Tuesday.
The
inability to track the whereabouts of migrant children after they have
been released to sponsors has raised concerns that they could end up
with human traffickers or be used as laborers by people posing as
relatives.
Currently, the
Department of Health and Human Services calls sponsors to check on the
children 30 days after they are placed. It also says that it is not
legally responsible for the children after they’re placed.
The
findings were accompanied by legislation introduced on Tuesday by
Republican and Democrat senators to clarify the department’s
responsibility for ensuring the safety of migrant children.
The
legislation would require HHS to run background checks on sponsors and
notify state governments before placing a child with a sponsor. HHS
would also have to make sure that sponsors care for the children
properly and appear at their immigration hearings. Interestingly, it
would also increase the number of immigration judges.
Edit: The article mentions there are records of migrant children being forced to work on an egg farm in Marion, Ohio. In June 2016, Aroldo Castillo-Serrano was sentenced to 15 years in prison for trafficking children to work on his farm.
He falsely promised them good jobs and a chance to go to school, then
had them work 12 hours a day, 6-7 days a week on his farm for as little as $20 per week. They had to live in dilapidated trailers on the farm, sometimes with no heat or running water.
This is human trafficking by a government. This is human rights violation.
Figured that out when the videos came out of little girls being smuggled, hooded, into private cars at 1am.
We are going to have a geberation.of children who are going to come back and bite you in the ass an as adults will not let any history book any conservative need channel or any narrowminded person forget what America has done. Don’t fucking forget it .
The very concept of a training bra is so gross like,
“hey dear, you may be prepubescent, but we gotta acclimate you to having a piece of elastic wrapped around your lungs for the rest of your life. Let’s get an early start on those little indentations you’ll have on your shoulders forever. The boys snapping your straps will prepare you for all the misogynistic harrassment in your future too.”
Me: The what now?
“In 2006, Target stores began stocking a range of bras for three- to four-year-olds, Bratz bras for three- to four-year-olds, Saddle Club bras for four- to six-year-olds, and a lightly padded Target brand bra for eight- to 10-year-olds. Australian retailer Big W’s added a Just Girls padded bra for eight- to 10-year-olds and a My Little Pony bandeau bra for two- to three-year-olds, and Bonds in February 2006 marketed the “My First T-Shirt Bra” for ages eight and up.
“
What??? WHAT??? TWO YEARS???

THIS IS PEDOPHILE CULTURE
WTF?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
My mom told me it was so people couldn’t see “my buds” through my shirts
Sometimes I purposely have headphones in with no actual music to stop people from trying to talk to me. Enraging.
I had to stop reading. this made my brain hurt. if she has head phones leave her alone. if she is me leave me alone always and forever
This is rape culture
Lol unless you’re telling her the bus is here, it’s the last stop on a train, or some pertinent information, leave the damn woman and her headphones the fuck alone.
Fixed it.
Thank you I was about to throw my phone at a wall
Okay but… can someone tell me why this is so bad? I mean, all the article told you (as a guy) to do is walk up to a girl with headphones on, motion for her to take them off, and pay her a nice and non-creepy compliment. It then tells you to tell her you have somewhere to go soon, so that the girl in question doesn’t feel crowded or like she’s in a conversation she can’t get out of.
This seems perfectly fine to me… is there some subtext I’m missing or something??
Women get approached in public a lot.Usually this is unwanted. One of the things women now do to combat this is to make themselves unapproachable, and one of the best ways to do that is to have on headphones. Lots of women wear headphones even if they aren’t listening to music, just to avoid unwanted advances from men they don’t feel like talking to.
This article is basically saying, “how to get around the physical barrier women have put up so they don’t have to talk to you.” It’s the equivalent of “Oh, she built a moat? well here’s how to build a bridge!”
It’s assumptive, it’s entitled, and it furthers the idea that men deserve to talk to women no matter what the woman herself actually wants. It’s giving men tools to try to knock down barriers women have put up deliberately to avoid having to interact with them. It’s creepy as fuck, it’s rude, and it’s furthering rape culture–ie the idea that men have a right to a woman’s time, body, etc.
There are times and places women may wish to be approached. But if they have in headphones, it’s a damn good bet this isn’t one of them, so concocting strategies to approach them anyway is ignoring their wishes in favor of the man’s, and that’s not okay.
